National Rifles Scrapbook Collection

Martin Petersilia Arts Collection

Scope and Contents

Consists of programs, invitations, musical scores, correspondence, publicity, photographs, and clippings from arts organizations such as the Greg Reynolds Dance Quintet, The Women's Arts Center, Momentum Black Theater, and the Nubian League. Items from arts organizations appear first arranged alphabetically followed and then general information about the visual arts and artists in Washington. Oversized materials are in a separate box.

Sewage Disposal Plant Photograph Collection

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of eighty-four 8x10 images that detail the construction of the District’s Sewage Disposal Plant between 1903 and 1906. The plant was located at the foot of New Jersey Avenue near the corner of 2nd and N Streets in Southeast D.C. The plant pumps collect sanitary sewage and some stormwater from the city’s sewer system to the Potomac River discharge point at Blue Plains, the southernmost point of the District.

Damu Smith Papers

Scope and Contents

The Damu Smith papers document Smiths' involvement in activism and community organizations. Among the records are biographical material, notes, photographs, audiocassette tapes, and research files. The research files cover Angola, South Africa, Korea, Iraq, the environment, and organizations such as the French Street Umoja Connection, Louisiana Cancer Alley, and the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

Stereoview Photograph Collection

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 45 stereoviews depicting various scenes and persons from the District of Columbia. Stereoviews, also called “stereocards” or “stereotypes,” are two nearly identical card-mounted images placed side by side. When viewed through a stereo viewer or stereograph, they give the image a three-dimensional effect. They were very popular from 1854 through the mid-1930s and often illustrate historic and exotic locations.

Taulman Slide Collection

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 366 35mm slides taken by photographers James Taulman (318 images), Jan Faul (29 images), and Robert Burgess (19 images) of buildings throughout the city. Tauman's images were taken as part of a project funded by Trammell Crow Company in Dalas Texas in 1980 to document recent commercial architecture across the country. Only the images documenting the District are included in this collection. The collection was assembled by the Library following its acquisition.

W. Bryant Tyrrell Photograph Collection

United Brick Company Photograph Collection

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 85 4x6 inch and 3.5x5 inch color images of the abandoned United Brick Company buildings and kilns. The kilns are located on New York Avenue NE and are currently owned by the United States National Arboretum. All the images were taken around 1993 and show the vast vegetation overgrowth and dilapidation of the site.

Washington, D.C. Postcard Collection

Scope and Contents The earliest postcards in the collection date from circa 1898 with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. The collection consists almost exclusively of imprinted (ink) postcards but also includes “real-photo” (gelatin silver) variety as well. The collection leans heavily towards images of tourist Washington but many images of “hometown” Washington are included as well (Businesses, Churches, Organizations, Restaurants, Schools – Private/Public, Stores, and...
